The dawn of HDTV and digital television - A compressed history of HDTV - DTV fundamentals - The DTV receiver - HDTV and DTV standards - The transition to metadata - Emerging technologies and standards - The future and digital broadcasting.
The author points out that HDTV is not a simple replacement of analog TV, but a fundamentally different system. Audio and video are said to be 'more perfect' and there is 'a new content transport paradigm', since programs arrive at a DTV receiver as 'separate audio, video and data packets with assembly instructions'.
