<p>Born in 1878, Hastings Lees Smith was an academic&nbsp;and Labour politician who was closely associated with Ruskin College in its early years. He was appointed&nbsp;to&nbsp;its Executive Committee in 1907&nbsp;before resigning to become Professor of Public Administration at the University of Bristol in&nbsp;1909. He joined the Labour party in 1919 and became an MP in 1922. He died in 1941.</p>
