<p>Born in 1878, Hastings Lees Smith was an academic and Labour politician who was closely associated with Ruskin College in its early years. He was appointed to its Executive Committee in 1907 before resigning to become Professor of Public Administration at the University of Bristol in 1909. He joined the Labour party in 1919 and became an MP in 1922. He died in 1941.</p>
