This film is Fassbinder's comment on some people's lives in West Germany in the late 1960s. The actors play characters with the same names: Michael and Gunther are friends who plan to find treasure in Peru, and Hanna is Gunther's girlfriend. However, this film is meant to be a comedy, so the friends are unaware that Rio das Mortes (where the treasure is supposed to be) is actually in Brazil.
