Tati regarded this film as his best and had a vast futuristic set especially built for it. Playtime is a surreal, comic vision of mankind's battle against the overwhelming depersonalisation of modern life. Hulot bumbles through this massive metropolis and there are jokes in sight and sound, with a specially composed soundtrack of footsteps, gibberish and lounge music. The film concludes on a positive note, with individualism seeming to make a comeback on the streets of Paris.

The film is in French and English languages, as there are a group of American tourists exploring Paris. Some of the French is translated into English subtitles.
